A Trip to Marrakech: A Sunny Getaway Just Outside Europe

Welcome to Marrakech, Morocco’s legendary “Red City,” nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. With its sumptuous palaces, lush gardens, colorful souks, and hidden gems, Marrakech captivates visitors with its energy, contrasts, and unique sense of hospitality. Here, every alleyway holds a surprise, and every moment invites you to escape the everyday.

A former imperial city founded in the 11th century, Marrakech has preserved its exceptional heritage while becoming a must-see destination for travelers from around the world. In the heart of the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, artisans carry on time-honored traditions, spices fill the air in the markets, and traditional riads hide true havens of peace behind their discreet doors. Just a short walk from this bustling scene, luxury hotels, art galleries, and contemporary restaurants reveal another side of the city.

Under the Moroccan sun, days begin with breakfast on the rooftop of a riad, continue through the paths of the Majorelle Garden, historic palaces, and bustling souks, and end with dinner under the stars. Marrakech is also an ideal destination for recharging your batteries: traditional hammams, exceptional spas, pools surrounded by palm trees, and gourmet dining come together to create a stay where relaxation and discovery blend seamlessly.

Beyond the city walls, Marrakech opens the door to spectacular landscapes. Less than an hour away, the Agafay Desert offers a unique experience that includes camel rides, dinners at sunset, and nights under the stars. Further afield, the Atlas Mountains invite you to hike, explore Berber villages, and immerse yourself in a wilder, more authentic Morocco.

Marrakech is a destination like no other, where traditions, cuisine, adventure, and sophistication come together in a truly immersive experience. TheWeekender has crafted a tailor-made getaway just for you, featuring charming riads, exceptional hotels, local experiences, and carefully selected spots, so you can discover all the magic of the Red City.

Marrakech is nicknamed “the red city” because of the ochre and pink hues of its ramparts and traditional buildings.

Founded in 1070, Marrakech is one of Morocco’s four ancient imperial cities, along with Fez, Meknes, and Rabat.

The famous Jemaa el-Fna Square has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list for its oral traditions and folk performances.

The Majorelle Garden, created by the painter Jacques Majorelle, was saved and restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980.

Marrakech is about a 3-hour flight from Geneva, making it an ideal destination for a long weekend in the sun.
